The number of Californians who have enrolled in Covered California has vastly exceeded the predicted number! The original six-month goal was 815,900. However, the final number enrolled is a whopping 1.4 million! Enrollment officially began on October 1st, and was scheduled to be open until March 31st. However, that deadline was extended to April 15th to accommodate those who were unable to finish their applications. More than half a million Americans signed up on the final day of open enrollment.
The state of California attempted to run its own website for the health exchange instead of depending on HealthCare.gov. The site did well, and only had minor complications. Overall, it worked much better than the federal exchange site. If you have missed the April 15th deadline, you will have to await next year’s enrollment period in the Fall.
