Stay on Track With These Resolution Tips
Are you one of those people who find themselves making the same resolutions year after year? You try to stick to the plan but find your enthusiasm waning. It may be you are simply going about accomplishing change in the wrong way. If you don’t want to shoot yourself in the foot again this January, check out these six tips for rising to the challenge.
Have a Tangible Plan Just saying “I want to eat better” is not a concrete resolution. You need a real plan for steps you can take to accomplish the goal and stick to it long term. Put your plan in writing so you’ll always remember what path you expected to take. In what way are you going to eat better? What tools can help you do that? What does success look like? Be Realistic No one knows your limitations better than you do. Don’t choose a resolution that is just too overwhelming. Pick an achievable goal and create a multi-step plan for how you will accomplish it. Don’t beat yourself up if you fall off the wagon. It happens. Just get back on and keep moving forward. Automate When Possible There are lots of great tech tools that can help set you up for success. If you want to save money, set up an automatic withdrawal each month through your bank’s mobile app. Track your exercise efforts with an app that syncs with a fitness bracelet you wear every day. Set your phone to play celebratory music every two hours when you haven’t gone outside for a cigarette. Celebrate Milestones If you’ve broken your resolution plan into small steps, take note when you meet the mini goals and allow yourself to celebrate. These moments of congratulations will motivate you to continue to the next milestone. Get a Buddy Finding a friend who also strives to improve his or her life is a great way to stay on track. The accountability might be just the push you need to stick through the difficult days. Find Your Passion Choose a resolution you really care about. Otherwise, you won’t feel bad if you let it go. For example, if you want to get into better shape, sign up for a future 10K race that benefits a charity you believe in.
